The university is clearly the flagship of education in the
town, but Vaasa is
more than a university town. Vaasa is a town for studying in, one which
offers something more. In a beneficial environment like Vaasa's, studying
is designed to be both individual and flexible. Students have an excellent
opportunity to concentrate and graduate quickly.
The accommodation situation for students in Vaasa is very good. The health
services work well, and there are child care facilities for all who need them.
As is natural in a town of Vaasa's size, the majority of services are close
to the students. This attention to basic needs has always been emphasised and
is much appreciated.
Education in Vaasa is highly specialised. As many alternatives as possible
are offered to those preparing for their working life. Degree programs can
be pursued in four languages, Finnish, Swedish, English and German. Vaasa's
role as a center of education goes back to the seventeenth century when
the grammar school was transferred from Nykarleby. Pupil at the school was
e.g. the national poet Johan Ludvig Runeberg.
