THE ACADEMIC YEAR


The academic year 1996‚97 starts on the 2nd of September 1996. The academic year at the University of Vaasa is divided into six teaching periods. Periods 1‚3 during the autumn term are each five weeks long and periods 4‚6 during the spring term are each six weeks long. This system of teaching periods means that the student concentrates on 1‚5 courses simultaneously over normally one or two periods, after which he sits a so-called Period Exam for each course. No specific time is reserved for revision, instead the student is expected to become familiar with the set literature during the course itself and to take the exam as soon as the teaching period is over.

The teaching periods for the academic year 1996-1997 are as follows:

No teaching is given during the winter (Christmas) break 16.12.96 ‚ 10.1.97 or during the spring (Easter) holiday 27.3.97 ‚ 2.4.97.
