Finnish Language and Culture

The Finnish Language and culture programme (Finnish as a foreign/second
language and Finnish literature and other forms of culture) is intended
for students who have begun their studies of Finnish or Swedish abroad
and who wish to continue their studies in Finland and Sweden. The
programme is carried out in co-operation between the Department of Modern
Finnish and Translation at the University of Vaasa in Finland and the
Department of Finnish at UmeĀ University in Sweden. Students are given
considerable freedom of choice with regard to the parts of the
examination they do in UmeĀ and Vaasa respectively. The studies of
Finnish comprises 80 credits in all, but 10 credits must be earned in
introductory courses in two Scandinavian languages and 10 credits in a
language cognate with Finnish. The studies are fairly equally divided
between linguistics and literature/culture.
