Finland has two official languages, namely Finish and Swedish.The Swedish-speaking minority comprises about six per cent of the total population.

Since neither Finnish nor Swedish is widely spoken internationally, foreign language instruction forms an important part of public education. The most widely studied foreign language is English, followed by German and French.
