Very basic thing: money they use in Finnland (in Vaasa too) is called finnish mark (in finnish: markka)- the international symbol is "FMK".

If you want to know how much DM or USD or even polish zloty you will have to pay for finnish mark below we've provided some currency converters for you convenience:

If you donīt have finnish marks you have to change. You can do it basically every bank in Vaasa. However you have to live with it that the standard fee for that operation is 10 FMK (undependent from the amount of money you exchange). The biggest disadvantage of exchanging is that you have to bring the money with you to Finland somehow. And who likes to carry around so much money with himself? Brr... "accidents" can pass even in Finland.

There is some better idea than exchanging money evertime you want some finnish marks. It is Eurocheque-Card. What about the EC-card in Finland? It is like Winnie-the-Pooh used to say: "You never can tell with the EC-card, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnīt." Yeah, the good, old Pooh was right - the EC-card is a new thing in Finland and it is not always accepted in the automatic teller machines. So if you want to make sure, that you get your money, take the Euro-cheques with your EC-card. It works without any further problems. (Donīt forget your ID!).

No problems with using Visa and other credit cards but we didn't used them :).

One can also open an account in every bank. To open the account you need your passport or another ID. One of the advantages of having an account is that you donīt need to pay cash in the VOAS for the dormitory. You just remit the money. Student accountīs fee is 10 fmk per month.

Here some prices from "Minimani" - the cheapest shop in the town.
