Here is the choice of some places to go out and get wasted. I have to say that it is an unofficial description.
Please read also my remarks below.
The stars (**) in brakcets mean the quality. (*) is the worst and (*****) are the best.

It became a tradition that all foreign students meet their other foreign colleagues and tutors in Panimo. It is called Stammtisch.
It is nice place with its own atmosphere but if you look for student there you may be disappointed with it since it is more like beaurgoise place.
They have a good choice of bottled beers and good cuisine !.
(****)
This is a place where you can chat to your profs and lecturers. The communication department is just round the corner. You can get tea, alcoholic drinks (for not that high price,) food and find most of students of communication department. They are hanging around there every now and then. Most of them spend their half a life at the Cotton tables ...

It is mainteined by VELMU (Vaasa Living Music Associationa) so it means that they have many different and of all kinds of music concerts. It is popular with certain groups of people e.g economy students don't go there (with of course a few exceptions). It is "quite" cheap. The place has really good acoustics since there was a church before.
It is open during the day time -- then it is more like youth cafe.

Ernst Cafe is a very special place in Vaasa. If you want to show off before your girl/boy friend you should take her/him there. It is called among some Finnish students (at least I have heard this) "randevous cafe". Calm music and beautiful furniture. It is not cheap though!
(***)
This is definately a place where many students and Vaasa teenagers meet. The staff from "El Gringo" consist of student from Vaasa University.
Cheap alcoholic drinks during happy hours makes this place quite affordable for almost everybody. They have good music but this is not for dance lovers.

This is the only jazz club in the whole town. They have concerts of interesting groups every week. Beer costs 15 fmk, usually entrance ticket costs 30/40 fmk depending on the group playing. Unfortunately it is a very small room for dancing.
(***)
That is exacly what is hidden behind the word "pub". Most of customers are Swedish speakers. Oliverīs Inn is the best place to party on Tuesday (10 fmk per beer since this is a happy hour day)
On Tuesdays they provide chaep beer. If you want to eat a steak you can be sure that you will get the real one and not piece of gum to chew. The food is cheap there.
There are often bands playing good music.

"Some peolpe say that techno is well out of fashion, but you have to admit, that itīs unusual continously pumping sound can move any lazy ass!". This is definately a place where you can try it. That is why Fontana is called "Techno Hell". You may also be really surprised how many teenagers come here and I guess just because of this fact.
(***)
It is a Tex-Mex restaurant. They offer good meals. The quality is superb but it is a bit expensive. Most of all it is a place where you can sit down and have meal and chat. They donīt offer any disco.
(***)
Hullu Pullo = Crazy Bottle in Finnish language. No wonder... this is the most crowded place at the weekends. They start from 22:00 and close at 4:00 in the morning. That is why it is so popular among most of local people as also students. Not mentioning the fact that thay don`t charge the entrance unless there is a concert. It isnīt the most beautiful place, though since you may be bothered by some drunken pepole. "Any place there are drunken Finnish Men ...is good to be beaten but Hullu Pullo has to be one of the highest concentrations of drunken Finns in the world".
(***)
You may meet ocasionally hotel guests there since there is hotel upstairs but it is becoming more and more a place that is visited also by students.
Every Friday nite half price admission for women. From time to time there are concerts of well known Finnish bands.
(**)
A nice Irish pub. For Guinness lovers. Usually people go there if they want to have a sit and talk.
(**)
"All Stars" is a cafe near the Tekla hostels. So these who will get their place to stay near this place will probably visit it very often. This is not the cheapest place. They have good food though. Also the staff is very friendly. Every Wednesday you may experience KARAOKE night.
(**)
Sky begins its work in May. Since it is a terrace it is impossible because it is cold to sit there in winter. But in May it is worth visiting and having a drink and take a glimpse of the panorama of the city.
(**)
Quite expensive. Sometimes they have special offers then you may get very cheap food and good. Suitable for bussiness meetings but not for really for a place frequented by students.
(**)
Traditional Pub. Usually with regulars. Not visited by many students.

The same about SEKU (Sekstantti). It is the nearest bar to the inside icerink. Seku is very similar to Birra, Itīs a little bit bigger but the customers are the same than in Birra, and probably Koti. Really these are the places for the old drunks. (**)
Looks like jungle. For kids between 17-19. They play techno and boogie there. Not that good.
(*)

This pizzeria is placed near Vöyrinkatu. So if you are staying in the studentsīs house that is in this street you shouldnīt miss it.

Really cheap, good food and nice atmosphere
(*****)

If you want to find the best party places in the town you should go If you follow this schedule, youīll anyway get most of the action...

On my remarks page you can read about the nightlife and Finnish habits. Thereīs also some stuff there concerning the Finnish drinking culture (among other stuff!).
