L I N D A

Can you tell a little bit about yourself?
I'm a 20 years old fresher at the University of Vaasa, English department. I come from Helsinki and ended up in Vaasa because my boyfriend Fredi is studying here as well. We have a one-year-old son Isac and I am doing my best to be both a good mom and student.

What are some of the best things in studying English in Vaasa?
I think studying here is really nice. There are some really good teachers here and the classes offered are interesting. The city is small but nice, especially as there are lots of students here.

What would you like to say to somebody who thinks about coming and studying

English major, third year student, originally from Vaasa, minoring in Swedish and Intercultural communication.

What are some of the best things in studying English in Vaasa?
Brilliant teachers, small department, nice campus area.

What would you like to say to somebody who thinks about coming and studying
here?
The English department here in Vaasa is quite small, but smallness has its advantages: teaching groups are small so you get personal teaching, and you also get to know the teachers well , which makes it easier to approach them with any problems you might have!

Can you tell a little bit about yourself?
3rd year student, approx. 100 study weeks so far. I'm majoring in English, minoring in Transcultural Communication and Regional Sciences. My goal is to graduate in 2 years from now, but I don't know what I would like to do after that, that is, I have no idea of my career objective.

What are some of the best things in studying English in Vaasa?
The university and department are small, and studying is therefore more "intimate". Also, it's great that one can minor in anything.

What would you like to say to somebody who thinks about coming and studying
here?

I encourage everybody to come and study here. The campus area is near the sea and nature, people are nice. And, what is extremely important, the teachers will always negotiate and they are here for you!

I am a third-year English student minoring in Interultural Communications and Russian. I am from Vaasa and, to be honest, I never even considered staying here after high-school, but luckily I did.

What are some of the best things in studying English in Vaasa?
We have great teachers, who are competent and supportive. Also the atmosphere in the Department is good. In here, you can choose your minor-subjects even outside your Faculty, which is a positive thing.

What would you like to say to somebody who thinks about coming and studying
here?
Don't be afraid of the fact that the university is small. It is actually one of its advantages. Coming here is a choise you won't regret.

Can you tell a little bit about yourself?
I am third year English major who enjoys his studies enormously.

What are some of the best things in studying English in Vaasa?
English department is small and friendly, but nevertheless, offers a substantial number of different kinds of courses from various fields of study. In fact, the department's emphasis on literary and cultural studies on the side of linguistics and translation has been a WELCOME surprise.

Teachers are great and know their subjects extremely well. Some of them are also refreshingly weird at times which makes the life of their students all the more interesting. They are also friendly and easy going, and truly interested in their students; they are usually ready to listen to us and what we have to say about different things in question. Hence, there is a certain feeling of solidarity and mutuality among the staff and students.

What would you like to say to somebody who thinks about coming and studying
here?
English department is great, and I can guarantee that any newcomer will be POSITIVELY surprised if they make the decision to come to study here in Vaasa.

Can you tell a little bit about yourself?
I'm a 4th year English major originally from Helsinki. I came to Vaasa about 3 1/2 years ago without any previous experience from the "city" and despite the culture shock and the local hostility towards all the people from Helsinki, I have enjoyed my time. I plan to graduate quite soon and leave this town behind but I'm going to miss it like hell.

What are some of the best things in studying English in Vaasa?
Some might say that it's a disadvantage that the University of Vaasa is so small but I'd say it's a great advantage and opportunity to study in a place where you get to know all your teachers and where your teachers know you. I must admit that being a male student in the Human faculty is not a bad thing considering that most of the people studying here are female. In addition to the fact that you are surrounded by beautiful girls you are always remembered since you're probably the only guy who takes part in a class. Our teachers here are excellent. They are not only compentent in their work but they are also great personalities and quite fun to hang out with. As I said, it is quite easy to be remembered in Vaasa which is also of great help when applying for jobs. Though it is quite natural that people move to bigger cities after they graduate, in Vaasa it's quite easy to get some job experience from your own field since local companies really appreciate the University. If I wasn't studying here, I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't have the dream job I now have.
