Finnish was taught at the Department of Modern Languages in what was
then the Vaasa School of Economics and Business Administration,
both as the students1 native language and in connection with the
teaching of economics and business correspondence until 1968. When
translation became a subject of instruction at the University of
Vaasa in 1980, Finnish became a main subject for Swedish
speakers studying for their M.A. examination, and in the same year
the chair of Modern Finnish was created. In 1991 the University
of Vaasa was made a state institution, and in 1992, when the
present system of faculty administration was established, the
Department
of Finnish was created. In 1993 modern Finnish also became a main
subject for students with Finnish as their mother tongue and in the
following year the name of the department was ratified as the Department
of Modern Finnish and Translation. In 2001 Modern Finnish as
a Foreign Language became main subject for students who have begun
their Finnish studies abroad.
Nowadays the following number of students are annually admitted to
study Finnish as their main subject:
