XXIX VAKKI-SYMPOSIUM

"Language and Power"

13—14.2.2009

Vaasa, Finland


The VAKKI symposium is an occasion for researchers in LSP, translation, multilingualism and related fields to meet in an international and multilingual environment. We welcome papers relating to LSP, translation and multilingualism (a 20-minute paper followed by 5 minutes of discussion). In 2009 our special theme is Language and Power, but other papers in VAKKI´s research field are also welcome. The proceedings will be edited in consultation with a special editorial review board. The plenary speakers will be:

Prof. Ulrich Ammon, University of Duisburg-Essen

Ulrich Ammon is the professor of German Linguistics at the University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany. His special field of expertise is sociolinguistics. He has worked as a visiting professor in a number of countries, for example, in USA, Australia, Japan and Austria. Ulrich Ammon has also had an active role in many scientific organizations. For example from 2003 to 2006, he acted as the chairman of the Society of Applied Linguistics (Die Gesellschaft für Angewandte Linguistik, GAL).

pol. mag. Johan Häggman, Special Advisor in European Commission

Johan Häggman has been a member of Leonard Orban's cabinet responsible for  multilingualism within th European Union since 2007. He has also worked as a journalist and project leader in European Bureau for Lesser Used Languages. In addition, he has worked as a correspondent for several European newspapers as well as a special advisor in the European Parliament.

PhD Peter R. R. White, University of Adelaide

Peter White is a Senior Lecturer and Head of the Department of Linguistics at the University of Adelaide, South Australia. He has lectured in English language and linguistics at the University of Birmingham in the UK, and he has also worked as a reporter and editor in newspapers, radio and television, as well as a journalism trainer. Peter White is one of the architects of "appraisal theory".

Preliminary schedule:

Opening on Friday 13 February 2009 at 11 am. Registration begins at 10 a.m.
Closing on Saturday 14 February 2009 at 5 pm

Participation fee:

Until 15th of January 2009 105 € (for VAKKI members 85 €) and from 16 of January 2009 120€

The participation fee includes:

- programme (day and evening)
- lunch and coffee on both days
- a copy of the symposium publication
