IBM Network Station 300 hardware details

Introduction

General hardware details and setup instructions can be found in the following IBM publication:

The guide has several illustrations of the unit and accessories, as well as instructions on opening it and adding in more system or video memory. All ports and connectors are detailed.

Series 300 models

Series 300 has three models. They all look the same and share the same characteristics, but differ in their network interface:

Product number Network interface Physical connector Network controller
8361-110 10BaseT 8-pin modular jack National Semiconductor DP83907VF AT/LANTIC II
8361-210 Token ring ? ?
8361-341 Twinax ? ?

Common hardware characteristics

The common hardware characteristics are as follows:

Feature Name, value, etc. Type Comments
CPU type PowerPC 403GCX ? Features an MMU
CPU clock speed 66 MHz (or 88 MHz?) - (unconfirmed)
CPU L2 cache (?) 64K 2 × ISSI IS61C256AH-15J L2 cache or something else?

"32K x 8 high-speed CMOS static RAM (15 ns)"

RAM 16 MB in the standard factory configuration 60 ns EDO 72-pin JEDEC standard SIMMs Two SIMM slots; expandable up to 64 MB
Video controller S3 Trio64V+ 86C765 The native IBM operating system software for Network Station 300 apparently only supports 8-bit (256-color) modes, even though the chip itself could do 16-bit and 24-bit  modes as well.
Video RAM 1 MB 2 × Samsung Electronic KM416C254DJ-5 Two __?__ sockets; expandable to 2 MB.

"256K x 16Bit CMOS dynamic RAM with extended data out, Vcc=5.0V, 50ns, 8ms refresh period in 40-pin SOJ package. Operational temperature range from 0°C to 70°C"

I/O controller National Semiconductor SuperI/O PC87303-IAT/VUL Handles at least keyboard, mouse, serial port, IEEE 1284 parallel port, real-time clock
Sound 8-bit, mono ? Built-in speaker, no outside connectors.
Network controller (Varies by model) (Varies by model) See the above table for details
PCMCIA controller ? ? (unconfirmed)
Flash memory / NVRAM 512K ST Microelectronics M29F040 This must be where the Boot Monitor and its settings live.
