Department of Mathematics and Statistics

  Profile

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics comprises three disciplines: mathematics, business mathematics and statistics. The Department carries the overall responsibility for teaching and research on these subjects and for their further development at the university of Vaasa. At the level of master's degree there are no actual main subject students; teaching at the Department is rather oriented towards areas of application in other disciplines. Postgraduate options in the Department include the opportunity to complete the Licenciate's or doctors degree in economics with business mathematics or statistics as a major subject. The degree of Doctor of Philosophy is offered in all subjects available at the Department. Research activity at the Department also prioritises areas of application, with business economics, financial statement analysis and technique currently represented.

  Research

Research activity at the Department centres on the mathematical and statistical modelling of phenomena in economics. Research is characterised by co-operation between the application subjects. One especially strong area is the successful application of mathematical and statistical models to problem areas in financial markets and financial statement analysis. Mathematical research joint projects include the fields of IT and production economics, as exemplified in computer graphics, algorithms and the design of computer aided production models.
