What kind of expireware is acceptable to Garbo?
Question: We recently downloaded your
instructions for uploads and found that Garbo does not except files
that have "fixed date" limits. Does this mean that if the program
stops working on "6/6/96" that we can not upload it or if the
program stops working 15 days after install or both?
Dear Valued Garbo Uploader,
UPTEXT.TXT
states
Demo: Y/N
- (Answer Yes if the software is restricted so that it
essentially cannot perform the task it was designed to do:
e.g. word processors that cannot save files, restricted data
size, communication prog with limited time communication,
calculators with a highly limited set of functions in
comparison with the full version, etc. Expireware, that
is programs that cease to function after a certain date, are
not accepted at all.)
In other words: If the program stops working e.g. on "6/6/96" then
the program would not be acceptable at Garbo and would be discarded
outright. But if the program stops working 15 days after install,
then the submission is welcome and would be considered.
However, if the latter alternative hides the information deep within
the user's harddisk as extra hard-to-locate files without an
uninstall option, that method would not be acceptable. The reason is
somewhat selfish. We Garbo moderators do not wish to hunt the
remnants all over our own hard disks after we have tested a
submission.
- All the best, Timo
