The Reflector Chronicles

The birth of a reflector

The first Finnish public CU-SeeMe reflector was started in September 1994 by the Computer Centre and the Department of Communication Studies, University of Vaasa.

The reflector software was first run in a computer called "Garbo", but the 1st November 1994 it was transferred to another computer called "Zippo". When the computer was replaced with another, the nick name Zippo and the same IP that everybody knew were kept. In June '99, the reflector software was transferred back to the original computer that was found lying in a computer spare part storeroom at the computer centre. So the computer is the same that the ref got its nick name, but the domain name now is actually verkko.uwasa.fi. Verkko means "net". So you are in the "Net"

The history of the name

A new set of computers were given names after the Marx Brothers, and for some reason one of the names was misspelled and Zeppo became Zippo... when the mistake was discovered it was too late.

Vaasa - bringing people together around the world

The Vaasa reflector has become a favorite meeting point for people around the world and many friendships have been established. To enforce them the regular visitors are gathering for Vaasa meets here and there now and then, eg. San Francisco July 1997, 'Loo (Waterloo) in Canada 1998, 1999, and 2000, Stockholm 1998 and 1999, The Hague in the Netherlands 1999. There exist occasionally web-sites with stories and pictures of these meetings. Many regulars have set up their own CUSM web sites. The addresses do not, however, live long because people move, change ISP etc.
